Monemvasia Castle (Kastro), Monemvassia or Malvasia usually called by the Franks is one of the most popular medieval fortresses around the globe. It is located on an extraordinary peninsula in the east coastal “foot” of Peloponnese at Laconia prefecture. For many the Monemvasia Castle (Kastro) is a legendary destination a cradle of Greek culture. Its remains present the defensive infrastructures attached with the town and the remarkable Byzantine-style churches. Its name generated from two Greek words “mone”-“emvassia” meaning “single entry”!
Visiting Monemvasia Castle (Kastro) may not be an easy thing, especially for people with disabilities. Always remember the scope of the castle that used to have; a castle to protect locals against the enemies! Therefore visitors should wear sport shoes and always hold a bottle of water especially during the summer-time.
Monemvasia Castle is also called as the Gibraltar of the east Mediterranean Sea. The rock is approximately ~300 m tall and ~2 km long.
Monemvasia New Town
Over the years the coastal new town of Monemvasia has been created. It is links the castle and Peloponnese in general with a bridge. That’s the reason that locals call the new town of Monemvasia “gefyra” meaning bridge in Greek.
In the new Monemvasia or Gefyra (bridge) you can find modern tourism infrastructure such as sea-front restaurants, traditional tavernas and local bars. Moreover the visitor can easily visit the neighbour beaches of Ag. Paraskevi and Xifias and even more to explore the unspoiled beauty of Laconia perfecture.
For those who adore small journeys, they can visit the Elafonissos Island to swim in the world-class “golden” Simou beach. It’s approximately 35 km from the new town of Monemvasia.
